Zohran Mamdani affirms he will reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
During his election campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
But his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment even though he is from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
