Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's Next President.
Following a conclusive second-round vote, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly built on promises to tackle increasing violence and drastically curb immigration.
He repeatedly pointed to immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he delivered an final demand for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the army presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Continental Shift
Several commentators see Kast's win as fitting into a wider conservative shift in the region, similar to recent electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts further frame it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote victory, Kast will not command an clear majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.
This legislative reality may challenge his policy goals, such as a promise to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a measure for which he has not offered specifics.
"We have many things about what a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will do them," said a political science professor.
The expert continued, "On economic policy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. But where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
