Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
