Vicky McClure are set to reprise their roles in the acclaimed crime series

The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
