Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
