The pre-Ashes verbal sparring is escalating further, with ex-England bowler Broad declaring that the English side will face "probably the worst Aussie squad in over a decade" during their tour this winter.

David Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Doubt

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – forecasting a clean sweep for the home side. "Should the skipper [Pat Cummins] be absent, they could perhaps snatch a single victory," Warner commented.

The Aussies remain undefeated in a Ashes match at home after England's 3-1 victory in the 2010-11 tour. Their 5-0 win three years later – following seven defeats in their last nine matches – came before 4-0 series victories in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Team Uncertainty and Fitness Worries for the Hosts

Yet, the top-ranked Test side, who have lost only one of their last thirteen series, enter the upcoming assignment with uncertainty over the makeup of their batting lineup and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is doubtful to play in the first Test at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to triumph on Australian soil as an England side, or any visiting team," Broad remarked during his podcast. "Australia have to be massive favourites."

"The Aussies face the most pressure because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got doubts over their squad and question marks over their skipper's condition. You wouldn’t be outlandish in believing – it’s actually not an opinion, it’s a fact – it is likely the worst Australian team since 2010. Meanwhile, it's the strongest England squad in over a decade. These factors match up to the fact that it’s going to be a thrilling Ashes series."

Comparison to Historic Tour

"Australia have been highly stable for a prolonged duration that it was clear who was going to open the innings, who would bat, which bowlers were available, and they don’t have that. It closely resembles a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England traveled and emerged victorious. The fact of the matter is Australia generally have to be bad to be defeated at home and England must excel. The English have a solid opportunity of performing exceptionally and the Australians face a real possibility of underperforming."

Selection Dilemma for England

A key question for the English camp remains their choice at No 3, with Ollie Pope and Bethell contesting the spot. Cook, whose prolific scoring paved the way for the tourists’ series win 15 years ago, believes it would be "strange" for Ben Stokes’ side to move away from Pope, who has been a consistent at number three for the past three seasons.

"I'd select Pope at three," said Cook. "I think it’s quite an easy choice. You’ve got a player who has been involved in this preparation for three or four years. He’s captained the side, he has delivered remarkable performances for the national side and he scores centuries. He understands how to score hundreds in the domestic game. If you get rid of him now, I believe that changes the whole dynamic of the foundation they've established over the recent years."

Although praising Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook said: "It would represent a major risk [to pick him] because if that doesn’t work what is the fallback option, someone you’ve just got rid of? They’ve invested so much in people like Ollie Pope and [Crawley that it would seem such a strange thing to change it now."

Captaincy Shift and Commentary Crew

Ollie Pope has been replaced by Harry Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, as per Cook, that will "ease the burden on" the Surrey right-hander.

"They’ve been proactive on that, considering if there is an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. This will relieve Pope. I believe it won't undermine him. I’m sure it will have disappointed him because whenever you're removed from a leadership role it isn't perfect, but I doubt it undermines him."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be accompanied by former Ashes champions Finn and Swann as in-studio analysts. The channel will provide its own audio feed but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Hatch based remotely in the UK, while Cook, Finn and Swann deliver expert analysis from on location. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the commentary team operating remotely, with the on-ground coverage to be hosted by Ives.
