The Gunners' boss has expressed confidence that his squad can continue to cope with fitness issues after confirming that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The German forward has been out since the summer after undergoing knee surgery. Originally slated to return at the start of this month, the manager stated the player encountered a problem when increasing his training and failed to reach “the required stage.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains in contention after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Linger

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. Therefore, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements during the summer has left Arsenal in a far better place to navigate such absences.

Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if more options was aiding their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now the problems with the backline,” he added.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Commenting on the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it appears like we have unlocked that.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I see him suffer while sidelined.”
