British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
