Citizens have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the agreement.

A senior delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the day's discussions finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict governance of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that around the majority of Israelis prefer the conflict to finish in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"When the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.

"We are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the southern area, medics reported.
