Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
