Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to stay indoors as powerful gusts strike the region.

Intense gusts attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled officials to halt more than 100 flights, according to domestic outlets.

These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and lower areas of the northern region, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have released uncommon high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in core zones such as these major districts.

People have been encouraged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and get ready for further electricity and network failures.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Measures

This outage appears to be affecting households mostly in the southern region, while authorities report that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the winds.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was swept into oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been cancelled due to the gusts, whereas some roads and libraries are not operating.

Meanwhile local leaders have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Alongside Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on this day coincide with many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "major walkout", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the severe conditions has forced them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or abandoned.

Like conditions are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Authorities have issued flame prohibitions for concern about forest fires.
