Chernobyl Catastrophe Containment Structure No Longer Blocks Radiation, Needs Major Repair – International Atomic Energy Agency

The protective shield covering the Chornobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine can no longer perform its main safety function of containing radioactive material, as announced by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This failure follows a drone strike earlier this year that caused significant damage in the protective shell.

Structural Compromise from Aerial Attack Degrades Containment System

An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in February caused a breach in the so-called “New Safe Confinement” arch. This enormous protective structure, built at a cost of €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was intended to contain radiation over the long term. An IAEA assessment mission confirmed that the strike had weakened the structural integrity of the steel confinement.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that inspectors found no lasting harm to key support structures or monitoring systems.
