Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

This Academy Award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us aged 89.

The actress, with roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. Her passing was shared in a statement by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor her daughter Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who appeared with Diane Ladd in various films including Wild at Heart, called her “my incredible hero and my profound gift being my mom”, stating that she was present when she passed.

“She was the most wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist along with caring individual that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Her initial acting years featured supporting roles in TV shows like The Fugitive whereas that decade had her appearing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role landed Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Later Decades

During the eighties, she was seen in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow plus funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a television series inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she received a further Oscar nomination for supporting actress nomination for her role in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the mom of her actual daughter the character played by Dern. A year later she received an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose, another movie which included her daughter.

“This was the film that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew us to England for a premiere and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd shared of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and weeping, seeing us act.”

That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film bringing her back with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as Dern’s mother again. The decade also brought her TV award nominations for work on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.

Working with Laura Dern

She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, a movie, David Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and Mike White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She also appeared alongside Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.

Writing and Directing

She additionally penned and directed the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck featuring her and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she said. “I was honored to direct him on a project. Indeed, I’m the only woman ever to helm a film with her ex. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also a relative of Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a major inspiration on my life”.

Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and informed she had just six months to live but made a full recovery once her daughter moved her to a different hospital.

“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, instead apply it to discover, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd said.
