A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
